The summer is a great time for an internship – and now is the best time to start looking for one.

CIGNA Actuarial Internship Program

Career Services recently learned from CIGNA, a global health services company, that they will accept Stonehill applications for their competitive summer actuarial program. Positions are primarily located in Hartford, CT with some positions also in Philadelphia, PA and Denver, CO. CIGNA will provide housing for students who do not live near the internship site. Click on the link below to get more information. Interested students can contact Ryan Jessel at ryan.jessell@CIGNA.com/860-226-9279 with questions.

Career Connection

The CIGNA opportunity will be posted at a later date in Career Connection (Jobs, Internships, Mentors database) on the Career Services website. Check the internship database periodically for additional internship listings. Internships can be done at any time of the year. There is currently an internship posting for the Federal Reserve Bank which requires a math background. Look for ID# 5732. See below for access information.

Mentors

When you are in Career Connection also take a look at Stonehill’s Career Mentor Database. The database is comprised of approximately 1,000 alumni who want to be available to Stonehill students and alumni who are looking for career guidance. Mentors are an excellent resource for networking and information-gathering within a career field.

What will I find in the database for me?:

For example, here are some Math majors in the database:
    Employer Name and Job Title
    Travelers Insurance Actuarial Analyst
    The MathWorks Database Analyst
Norton Public Schools High School Math Teacher
American Home Mortgage Senior IT Programmer
    World Teach Volunteer Teacher

FAQs:

How do I access the database?

·     Log in to Career Connection (username = your ID#; password = stonehill): http://www.stonehill.edu/careerconnection.xml

·     Click on the tab “Mentor Search”

How do I find mentors?

You can search in a number of different ways, depending on who you want to connect with:

If you want to find someone who…

Search by:

Works at a particular company/organization

“Employer name”

Ex: Fidelity

Works within a particular job field

“Industry”

Ex: Healthcare

Plays a particular role in their company/organization

“Job function”

Ex: Writing

Participated in a year of service

“Post-Graduate Service”

Works in a particular location

“City” “State” or “Country”

What should I ask mentors for?

That depends on what you want to get out of the interaction, some suggestions are:

·     Ask for 15-30 minutes of their time for an “informational interview” (either over the phone or in-person) in which you ask them questions about their career path

·     Ask to job shadow – them or a colleague – for a day

·     Ask them to critique your resume, cover letter, or graduate school essay

·     Ask them to mock interview you

·     Ask them to speak about their expertise at an on-campus program

Things to remember:

  • Always be respectful of their time and communicate professionally (use titles, full names and salutations in your email correspondence)
  • Do not ask for too much – while job and internship opportunities might naturally arise from these interactions, the database is not intended as a job search tool
